Canstruction is Taking Shape

Canstruction is Taking Shape

LCDS is participating in the Central Pennsylvania Region Canstruction Build-out on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. The engineering firm David Miller/Associates, Inc., is mentoring our team in this year’s competition.

On Saturday, February 11 a practice build session will be held at LCDS. The Canstruction sculpture will be on display in the school’s lobby for several weeks in February. After dismantling the sculpture the team will rebuild it at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg on Thursday, March 1.   The sculpture will remain on display for a week during the Home and Builders Show in Harrisburg, then it will be dismantled and the cans of food donated to area food banks.

A Taste of France

Eighth grade French students were treated to a French luncheon on Tuesday, January 31.   Lights were dimmed and French music was played.  Tablecloths direct from the south of France adorned the tables, as well as lavender and other flowers for ambiance. Parents Ruth Peebles and Betsey Sterenfeld prepared a wonderful lunch which included freshly baked French bread, Soupe au Pistou, a grated carrot salad with a lemon vinaigrette (always available in the charcuteries/delis throughout France), Quiche aux épinards (spinach quiche) and a yogurt lemon cake which is a popular recipe made by even the children of France.  Miam, miam… as the French say!  Explanations and stories about the food were presented by the moms/chefs in French and in English.  It was a charming experience for our students and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.  A big "Thank You" to Ruth and Betsey for suggesting and volunteering to do this for our students!  It was the next best thing to sitting at a café in the south of France.  Mille fois merci!

Assistant District Attorneys Discuss Relevant Topic

On Feb. 1, three assistant district attorneys from the Lancaster County District Attorney's office came to Lancaster Country Day School to speak to upper school students about the issues of sexual violence and domestic violence in cases involving both adult and adolescent victims. Because of the recent news of these cases, we want our students to be well informed regarding the law, how to report a possible violation of the law and what happens after a report is taken.  It is the intention to educate the students regarding local criminal prosecution so as not only to personally increase student knowledge but to also ensure a safer community.

The presenters were Susan Moyer, chief of appeals/legal services; Susan Ellison, chief of special victims; and Karen Mansfield, sexual and physical abuse trial attorney. They shared their particular insights on the prosecution of cases involving sexual and domestic violence in Pennsylvania’s criminal justice system.  The presenters highlighted several Lancaster County cases to illustrate the applicable law, the manner of prosecution and the affect on the victims.

WGAL News featured this presentation on the news. Several students and faculty were interviewed for the TV story.

Students Gain Insight During Career Day

Career Day was held on January 25 for the sophomore class. This is one in a series of events geared towards the 10th grade theme of thinking about careers. The students completed a career interest survey this past fall and will participate in an intern day in April.  In conjunction with the career day, several LCDS parents spoke with the 10th grade class about their personal career journeys.  The parents shared details about their educational choices, the twists and turns along the way within their careers, and what they're doing now.

The business owners/executives who spoke included:
Rick Seavey who owns National Novelty Brush Company
Mark Miller who is COO for Ethosource, a company that repurposes office furniture
Blair Mohn who is an entrepreneur and has started a number of different businesses
