INFIRMARY PROCEDURES
Minor illness or injury is cared for at the school infirmary as needed. If there is any doubt about the seriousness of an injury, the school will make every effort to contact the parent or guardian to determine a course of action. The infirmary is located off the Lower School hallway, opposite the Steinman Theatre, Room 174B.
The school does provide student accident insurance. Parents need to rely on personal coverage for the primary coverage and the school provides secondary coverage. If a family does not have primary coverage, the school’s insurance will become primary. This only applies to injuries sustained during the school hours or a school sponsored activity on or off school premises.
Before the first day of school, parents should return a completed LCDS Medical Information Form which will allow the Nurse to dispense Tylenol, Advil or Tums when necessary without having to contact parents each time. No medication of any kind is provided by the school – except Tylenol. All other “over-the-counter” medications may be administered without specific written instructions from a licensed physician or dentist. Prescribed medication may be administered by the nurse with the specific written instruction of the attending physician or dentist and WITH permission from the parent. The medication must be presented in the original container; the instructions must include the name of the student, the name and dosage of the medication, and the time it is to be administered. A request for a long-term medication must be updated at the beginning of each school year.
Students may NOT carry any medication on their person or in their backpacks during school hours unless written permission is obtained from the prescribing physician and provided to the nurse. Students are expected to be responsible for going to the infirmary when it is time to take their medication. Epi Pens and Inhalers may be kept with students.
Medical Information Emergency Forms are due yearly for each student before the start of school. Physical Exam Forms are due for K, 6th and 11th grade. Dental Exam Forms are due for K, 3rd and 7th grade students. Medication Administration Forms to permit the nurse to administer prescription medication and over the counter remedies require a parent and physician signature. PIAA Parent and Physician Form for all Upper School students participating in sports are due before the first day of practice.
ILLNESS AT SCHOOL
IF YOUR CHILD IS ILL, HE OR SHE SHOULD NOT BE IN SCHOOL. CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN ILL DURING THE NIGHT SHOULD REMAIN AT HOME FROM SCHOOL THE FOLLOWING DAY. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE IN SCHOOL WITH EVEN A MILD FEVER. If a child has been running a fever and/or prescribed antibiotics, he or she should have a normal temperature for 24 hours before returning to school. Please, also do not send your child to school with pink eye, with a severe runny nose or cough, with a sore throat, with nausea, with a headache or earache, or other maladies. Children who come to school with these health issues will be sent to the nurse and you will be called to pick up your child. When you send a sick child to school, you run the risk of infecting classmates and faculty and of prolonging the illness of your child.
IMMUNIZATIONS
If your child is in preschool or kindergarten or is a new student to the school, please make sure your child’s immunizations are up-to-date before the beginning of school. The nurse will be checking all health records early in the school year. Children must be properly inoculated to remain in school.
